Lean Philosophy

Lean is a continuous improvement approach that provides a set of useful tools and techniques to eliminate waste in the process and reduce wasteful activities that don’t add value. It is based on the following principles:

  • Define Value: The value of a product/service is defined by customer expectations. Every activity in the process must be classified as value-adding or non-value adding.
  • Map the Value Stream: Map and analyze every activity involved in producing and delivering products and services. Identify and eliminate non-value adding steps in the process, to streamline the workflow.
  • Create Flow: Ensure uninterrupted flow in the production process or in activities that add value to the end-product or service. The goal is to maximize value for the customer and efficiency in the process.
  • Establish Pull: Enable a pull system that only allows for the processing products and services where there is customer demand.
  • Continuously Improve: Ensure consistent effort is applied to improve value in business processes, to eliminate waste and enable continuous improvement culture.

Six Sigma Methodology

Six Sigma is a problem-solving framework that uses a data-driven approach to lower defects and minimize process variation. This is a 5-stage framework (DMAIC):

  • Define: Set boundaries, expectations and performance targets in a project outline, always keeping in mind the customer’s perspective.
  • Measure: Collect objective data and measure process variables to determine actual performance.
  • Analyze: Analyze data a from various sources to look beyond symptoms, and instead determine the true root cause affecting a problem.
  • Improve: Assess possible solutions through testing and design of experiments. Measurement is also critical at this point to determine if the solution meets the desired target.
  • Control: Standardize the process by implementing changes and monitor performance regularly to determine sustainability of the controlled solution.

Increase Customer Satisfaction and Employee Morale:

Together, Lean Six Sigma reinforces the customer standpoint throughout the business value chain. It enables an organizational culture that relies on cross-functional teams and objective data analysis to achieve operational goals.

There are different levels of Lean Six Sigma certification, from White Belt to Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt and ultimately Master Black Belt.

Trainee Testimonials

“The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course is a must! It enhanced my toolkit tremendously to solve non-trivial problems. The need for improvement is everywhere.

The use of data-driven tools and statistical approaches will only increase as companies improve on their competitive edge. The wealth of data accessible through industry 4.0 is growing exponentially. However, there is no use in collecting data if you don’t know what to do with it. This course teaches you, amongst other things, data-driven and statistical thinking.

With my Projects I completed during the course, we are now confidently ready for direct exports at significantly reduced costs and reduced risk. We are therefore more competitive and look forward to increasing our export business.”

Markus Noertemann, Operations Manager - Hansens Engineering

“My expectation was to be equipped with tools to deal with problems in the factory which cause the process of the production to be less efficient.

The methods that I learned during the course has equipped me with the tools I need to address these problems, to find the root cause behind them, and implementing solutions to realize savings for our company.

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt course was extremely relevant to the job that I perform and I would recommend it to my peers and staff!”

Drikus Greeff, Process Engineering Manager - First National Battery
